Crew Studio Case Study
3 YEAR ACTING
Production
How Crew Studio delivered a full industry production model for 32 BA3 actors at Italia Conti.
“The students loved working with their directors and DOPs and learnt so much by working as both actors in front of the camera and behind as crew. “
Charlie Barker
Course Leader, Italia Conti
For Italia Conti, the impact was felt both in delivery and in the students’ experience of the process itself.
The Challenge
When Education Meets Production Pressure
Production wasn’t their core discipline.
Internal resources were stretched.
The model needed restructuring.
Italia Conti’s BA3 end-of-year filmed project had become increasingly demanding on internal staff.
The institution excels at actor training, whilst large-scale screen production is not its core discipline. In previous years, tutors and academic staff were required to manage:
Scheduling Complexity
Location Sourcing & Management
Budget Management
Safety Compliance
Technical Delivery
Cast Scheduling
The creative ambition remained high, but the operational strain was significant. Italia Conti needed a partner to take full ownership.
The Production Model
Crew Studio embedded a professional production environment inside an academic framework, giving actors their most demanding experience yet.
Professional Infrastructure
Just like any Crew Studio Production, students were exposed and taught about call sheets, department structure and defined crew roles; all elevating their confidence for future screen work.
Industry Cinema Equipment
Actors worked on a set fuelled by industry leading professionals using Cinema Cameras, advanced lighting setups and a structured monitoring workflow.
Live Production Conditions
Actors were educated on Film & HETV workflows, before performing on a live set where they hit marks, maintained continuity and discovered industry tricks to enhance their performance.
Students were not sheltered from production realities. They were supported inside them.
From The Silver Screen
Real-World Set Experience
Students had a chance to work with industry leading professionals, and tap into their experience from decades of work in Film and TV. Uniquely placed HODs led the creative delivery.
Cinema Camera & Lenses
Professional cinema equipment from Sony Cine Line camera systems used in Film & HETV.
Actors understood how lens choices and camera placement impact their choices down to the finest detail.
Professional Sound, Mixed for Screen
Audio recorded by experienced sound recordists using broadcast-quality equipment.
Actors discovered the technical changes audio recording presents with screen performance.
Real-World Filming Environment
Structured shoot days to mirror the rhythm of our professional productions.
Delivering their performance within the constrains of Film & TV, preparing them for life on a working set.
The Result
Cinematic, Performance Driven Scenes
Professional footage, shot and delivered at scale shifting classroom exercises to screen-ready performances.
Each scene was approached as a standalone production, with full crew, considered lighting and a focus on performance within the frame. The result is a body of work that feels intentional, cinematic and grounded in real industry practice.
