ARRI ALEXA 35 Xtreme: The Ultimate Slow‑Motion A‑Cam Just Arrived

Cinematography Masterclass with Aputure

Tutor: Zoran Veljkovic SAS

ARRI has just unveiled the ALEXA 35 Xtreme, a major in‑camera hardware upgrade over its trail‑blazing ALEXA 35.

It’s jam‑packed with high‑speed capabilities, new compression tech, longer pre‑record buffers, and smarter power and connectivity, yet comes in at exactly the same price as the original ALEXA 35.

What’s Changed?

Blistering high frame rates:

Sensor Overdrive mode pushes up to 660 fps (at reduced 11‑stop dynamic range, base EI 1600) while retaining full 17‑stop range up to 330 fps.

Frame rates available with ALEXA 35 Xtreme compared to the “classic” ALEXA 35 model – both in standard and “Sensor Overdrive” modes. Credit: ARRI, used with permission
  • 4.6K Open Gate at 120 fps
  • 3.8K 16:9 at 150 fps
  • 3.8K 2.39:1 at 240 fps (new recording mode!)
  • 2K 16:9 S16 at 330 fps

Recording upgrades:
Pre‑record buffer now five times longer—up to 30 seconds in 4.6K or five full minutes in HD at 24 fps.

Efficiency gains:
~10 % lower power draw, better thermal design
Enhanced Wi‑Fi including 5 GHz support, roaming and auto‑reconnect.

Backward compatibility:
Full compatibility with existing accessories and media.
Works with previous feature licences (ARRIRAW, Open Gate, Look, etc.)—these carry over through the upgrade process.

ARRICORE codec: ARRI’s new RGB codec compresses roughly half the data of ARRIRAW while allowing post‑adjustments to EI, white balance and tint—with workflow consistency for ProRes/ARRIRAW users.

ARRI ALEXA 35 Xtreme Cinema Camera

New ALEXA 35 Xtreme sets in the UK start at approximately £43,200, depending on exchange rate and VAT.

For existing ALEXA 35 owners, ARRI offers a permanent hardware upgrade for £13,950 inclusive of parts and processing at ARRI Service Centres (initial UK quote £16,740 inc. VAT).

What Does It Mean for Productions?

This isn’t just another incremental update: the ALEXA 35 Xtreme means one camera can now do standard and high‑speed shooting seamlessly, eliminating the need to rent separate high‑speed gear. Like ARRI intends, this eliminates the need for secondary high-speed cameras like a Phantom Flex on most shoots, which could speed up shooting schedules and reduce rental costs for productions. The results match beautifully in post thanks to ARRI’s single colour science foundation. And with dramatically reduced data rates, you save on storage and streamline your workflow.

Hands-On Demo

Join CVP and ARRI, who will be hosting an exclusive first look in their Fitzrovia showroom on 6 & 7 August, where technical experts will walk you through the Xtreme in demo sessions.

The ALEXA 35 Xtreme delivers previously unattainable high‑speed performance in ARRI’s trusted Super‑35 package and at no extra cost. Whether you own an ALEXA 35 already or are planning your next camera acquisition, this is worth serious consideration. It’s ARRI saying: one camera, any speed, all your visual signature.
