Develop your eye for how light shapes a scene, guiding the audience’s focus and how to apply this across moving subjects.
Build core skills in rigging, safety, and lighting design to command small to mid-sized sets.
Define the gaffer’s role and lead lighting crews with confidence.
Rig ARRI SkyPanels, HMI Fresnels, and generators or power units safely.
Use bounce boards, flags, and diffusion to shape soft/hard light.
Follow BS 7909 protocols for electrical safety and risk assessments.
Solve complex lighting challenges and collaborate like a pro on fast-paced shoots.
Mood lighting for genres like horror (low-key shadows) and romance (warm, even tones).
DMX control systems to synchronise multi-light setups.
Troubleshoot faults (blown globes, tripped breakers) without delaying the shoot.
Light a scene with DOPs and directors, balancing speed and creativity.
Film a scene using your lighting plan, with feedback from industry pros.

This course is designed for entry level sparks and best boys either looking to step up on their next job or gain fundamental skills in the lighting department.
Attendees should demonstrate a willingness to follow guidance and ability to work as a team. Filmmaking is a collaborative process and Crew Studio champions teamwork, whilst letting each member learn at their own pace.
This course is taught in English, so a strong level of written and spoken English is desirable to ensure you can benefit from our training.
