Course Overview

Day 1: Your Role On Set & the Technical Applications

Day 1 focuses on building a strong theoretical and practical foundation in cinematography, with hands-on exercises using industry-standard equipment and cinema lenses.

Understanding the Cinematographer’s Role

  • Learn how to use light, composition, and camera movement to enhance storytelling.
  • Explore the collaborative process between cinematographers, directors, and other departments.
  • Troubleshoot common technical challenges like exposure, focus, and equipment issues.

Mastering Camera Systems

  • Get hands-on with Cinema cameras, understanding their unique features and workflows.
  • Experiment with lenses, filters, and rigs to see their impact on your shots.
  • Practice pulling focus, managing depth of field, and achieving perfect exposure in a studio setting.

Lighting Techniques

  • Learn 3-point lighting setups (key, fill, backlight) and how to manipulate shadows and highlights for mood.
  • Work with colour temperature and gels to create different emotional tones.
  • Practice lighting setups used in film, TV, and commercials, focusing on studio environments.

Shot Composition and Blocking

  • Master framing techniques like the rule of thirds, leading lines, and balanced compositions.
  • Block scenes for actors and camera, ensuring seamless movement and narrative flow.
  • Begin planning scenes for Day 2’s practical filming exercises.
Day 2: Hands-On Filming Experience

Day 2 is entirely practical, with participants filming scenes in a studio environment. You’ll apply the techniques learned on Day 1, receiving real-time feedback from Zoran Veljkovic.

Scene Preparation

  • Break into small groups to plan and storyboard scenes, incorporating lighting, composition, and camera movement.
  • Collaborate with fellow participants to block scenes and rehearse shots.


Filming Scenes

  • Shoot scenes using ARRI and RED cameras, experimenting with different lenses, filters, and rigs.
  • Apply advanced lighting techniques to create mood and depth.
  • Practice dynamic camera movement, including dollies, sliders, and handheld techniques.

Real-Time Feedback

  • Receive immediate feedback from Zoran Veljkovic on your shots, lighting, and overall approach.
  • Refine your work based on expert guidance, ensuring continuous improvement throughout the day.

Review and Discussion

  • Screen the filmed scenes as a group, analysing what worked and what could be improved.
  • Discuss how to apply these techniques to real-world projects, from indie films to commercials.

Zoran Veljkovic SAS

Zoran Veljkovic SAS is a British cinematographer, born in Serbia, with over 30 years of experience behind the camera. Zoran has built an extensive and diverse portfolio. His feature films have garnered BAFTA and EMI nominations, as well as prestigious festival awards worldwide.

As a mentor, Zoran brings his wealth of knowledge and passion for the craft to aspiring filmmakers, offering hands-on guidance and invaluable insights into the science of lighting, camera work, and the artistry of visual storytelling.

Previous Experience

This course is designed for aspiring cinematographers looking to build confidence in visual storytelling and the fundamentals of cinematography. While no extensive experience is required, some prior knowledge or experience in filmmaking would be ideal.

Commitment to Training

Attendees should demonstrate a willingness to follow guidance and ability to work as a team. Filmmaking is a collaborative process and Crew Studio champions teamwork, whilst letting each member learn at their own pace.

Strong Written and Spoken English

This course is taught in English, so a strong level of spoken English is desirable to ensure you can benefit from our training.
