By the end of this course, participants will know what it takes to work as a focus puller or clapperloader on professional sets. Through hands-on experience with industry-standard equipment, you will develop skills in focus pulling, slating, camera rigging, troubleshooting, and on-set problem-solving, preparing you for the fast-paced world of Film & TV production.

Demystifying the Actor-Director Relationship

Learn how to communicate effectively, give confident notes, and handle disagreements while creating a supportive on-set environment.

Experiencing the Actor’s Role

Perform scenes yourself to understand the creative and technical challenges actors face, improving your ability to guide them.

Directing Rehearsals and Scenes

Master running rehearsals, giving clear notes, and knowing when to compromise or stand firm in your vision.

Casting with Confidence

Learn how to spot the right actor, ask key audition questions, and make confident casting decisions for your project.

What You Will Learn

Day 1: Understanding Actors and Their Craft

Explore the “dark art” of acting and gain insights into what actors do, how they work, and how to communicate effectively with them. This foundational day will also include practical experience to understand the actor’s perspective.

  • Address common questions about working with actors.
  • Perform scenes as actors to experience their creative and technical challenges.
  • Experiment with dialogue scenes, reaction shots, and technical setups (e.g., hitting marks and tracking shots).
Day 2: Mastering the Art of Direction

Focus on building your skills in rehearsals and directing actors on set, ensuring clear communication and productive collaboration.

  • Learn how to run effective rehearsals.
  • Develop confidence in giving notes: when, how, and why.
  • Understand when to compromise or stay firm on your vision.
Day 3: Film a Scene Directing Actors On Set

Put your skills to the test by directing scenes with actors, combining everything you’ve learned into practical, on-set experience.

  • Work with actors on set to shoot scripted scenes.
  • Practice managing performance, camera, and crew dynamics.
  • Gain real-world experience in bringing your creative vision to life.

Professional Experience

This course is designed for camera trainees wishing to grow their confidence working as camera assistants. Previous camera traineeing experience will be required, whether on short form or HETV & Feature Film.

Commitment to Training

Attendees should demonstrate a willingness to follow guidance and ability to work as a team. Filmmaking is a collaborative process and Crew Studio champions teamwork, whilst letting each member learn at their own pace.

Strong Written and Spoken English

This course is taught in English, so a strong level of written and spoken English is desirable to ensure you can benefit from our training.
